Your Right, Your Planet in English

  • What do you look for when buying electronic products?
  • Do you check whether they come with an extra warranty or whether the manufacturer provides replacement parts (and if so, for how long)?
  • Do you know what premature obsolescence means? When it comes to repair and repairability, is your grandfather the only person who comes to mind, or have you ever tried to fix your broken gadget based on a YouTube video?
  • Have you ever considered buying a refurbished phone instead of a new one? Or you have already done it?
  • And are you aware of the warranty that comes with a refurbished device?

If you are interested in these issues, then you’ve come to the right place!

In focus: knowledge, rights, and responsibility

In a joint project between the Association of Conscious Consumers and the Institute of People-Environment Transaction at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of Eötvös Loránd University, we are seeking answers to your questions above, dear readers, and we are also trying to find channels through which we can discuss these issues with you.

Repair has become key to sustainability.

The Right to Repair Directive stipulates that, as EU citizens, we have the right to have defective products repaired more easily, cheaply, and quickly. The directive entered into force on July 30, 2024, and member states must apply it from July 31, 2026.

Sustainability and the „5R model”

Repair is closely related to the principle of the so-called „5 Rs of sustainability”:

  • Refuse: don’t accept unnecessary, disposable items.
  • Reduce: buy less, choose more durable products.
  • Reuse: give items a second chance in their original (reuse) or another (repurpose) function.
  • Recycle: if an item is no longer usable, collect it for recycling.
  • Rot: compost organic waste so that it can return to the natural cycle.

Repair is particularly related to the Reduce and Reuse steps. A sustainable lifestyle begins with buying less and reusing or repairing what we have, thus leaving a much smaller ecological footprint behind us.

Repairing an object is not a step back into the past, but a conscious decision for the future!

Digital engagement and community knowledge
