Keeping your kitchen clean with essential oils

Do you want your kitchen spick and span? Are you dreaming about a spotlessly clean fridge, microwave and kitchen counter? If you want to disinfect, deodorize and perfume using as few chemicals as possible, lemon and lavender essential oils are the perfect choice for you.

For cleaning the apartment, for disinfecting and deodorizing objects and rooms – you can use several types of essential oils in your household for different purposes. When it comes to choosing the right essential oil for cleaning, you should consider the ingredients and their possible risks and, of course, you’d better compare the prices of the different essential oils.

Which essential oils are the best to clean with? While only the best quality essential oils should be purchased for health and cosmetic use, lower quality essential oils can be used for cleaning if they are otherwise 100 percent natural essential oils.

Lemon essential oil

Perhaps it is the kitchen among all rooms that requires the most hygiene. That is the place for cooking on a daily basis, that’s where family members take their meals multiple times a day, where children rummage around, where food stuffs and drinks are often dropped or spilt over – obviously, this room needs regular cleaning.

As surface cleaner

Soda water with a bit of vinegar or soap is a brilliant cleaning stuff. If you want to enhance the effect and/or disinfect, deodorize, or perfume your kitchen, add a few drops of lemon essential oil to your solution. Thus, a biodegradable, home-made mixture can be substituted for the commercial, environmentally harmful disinfectant cleaning agent that you would otherwise use.

Ingredients: spray bottle (or a plastic spray bottle), a little soap or soda, lemon essential oil (3%).

How does it work? Spray a little of your mixture on the surface to be treated (refrigerator, microwave, kitchen counter…). Wipe it off with a damp cloth. Take care of your hands. Use rubber gloves to protect against the photosensitizing effect of furocoumarin in lemon essential oil.

As air freshener

Wiping off with lemon essential oil will not only make the work surface squeaky clean but it will also disinfect the kitchen air. Your kitchen will have a pleasantly fresh, uplifting scent. By the way, lemon essential oil has an invigorating and relaxing effect.

Ingredients: 20 ml vodka or pharmacy alcohol, 1-2 drops of essential oil (in a spray bottle, filled halfway up with boiling water).

How to use it? Move the bottle before use. Squirt. Leave the room. Alternatively, you may put dried flowers in a small bowl and drip a drop of essential oil mixture (e.g. grapefruit, patchouli, pine) on it.

In addition to lemon, the essential oil of other citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit, bergamot) can also be used for air freshening. They mix well with other essential oils (for example: Ylang-ylang, sandalwood, patchouli, geranium, palm rose…) so you can make your own unique air fragrance with them.

Eco-friendly detergents might be risky – and this is no scam

For mopping and deodorizing

You can put a few drops of lemon essential oil in the soapy water prepared for mopping. Essential oil mops are excellent deodorizers. In case you have a pet in the house, it is important to disinfect the rooms and eliminate odors.

You may want to wash the garbage bucket with warm vinegar water and then deodorize and disinfect with lemon essential oil.

+1 Lemon infused olive oil

Lemon-infused olive oil is fabulous to use in a salad dressing but is also nice to have on hand to simply drizzle over Mediterranean and Arab meals.

It is so easy to prepare: Scrub the organic lemons clean using soap. Dry it thoroughly. Remove the zest from the lemon in long strips. (The zest is just the bright yellow part of the peel, not the bitter white pith immediately below it.) Cut the lemons into smaller pieces and place them in a jar. Pour over cold pressed olive or sesame oil. Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Move the jar gently from time to time. Use in your favorite recipes and enjoy.

Lavender (Lavandel angostifolium)

Lavender essential oil can be used in household cleaners in the same way as lemon essential oil. It is especially recommended to clean the kitchen cabinets and the larder. Lavender smells great to us, but it’s highly repellent to moths and other insects. Because it has a soothing effect on the central nervous system, you can subsitute lavender for lemon essential oil, if you want to.

Lavender essential oil for burns

Lavender is a very effective essential oil against burns, so you should definitely have it in your kitchen./ OR: Lavender is unsurpassed in its ability to help soothe burns, promote healing and smooth scars. Even if you use it for nothing else, lavender essential oil belongs in your collection. When hot grease or oil splashes onto your hands, or after touching a hot oven accidentally, immediately pour cold water on your hands, and after a minute apply 1 drop of lavender oil to the burned area. In such cases, it is not necessary to dilute. If you’re dealing with anything more than a minor burn (ie. 2nd or 3rd-degree burns), seek medical attention immediately.

Caveats

– The safe and allergy-free use of essential oils is fundamentally determined by the quality of the products. You are much less likely to develop allergic reactions if you use good quality, 100% natural essential oils (those with chemical extracts pose a risk).

We must not forget that essential oils are concentrated chemicals in nature – if used improperly, they can be just as harmful as chemicals. Therefore, when using them, be moderate and always think about those in your environment (pregnant women, infants, epileptic patients, the elderly). Do a bit of research on the essential oils you are planning to use.

– Be careful. Since your nose will quickly get used to the pleasant smells, and after a while you will hardly notice them, you will be prone to sprinkle more and more into the environment…

– If used regularly and excessively, lavender can become irritating.

– Last but not least: you do not necessarily have to use essential oil every time you clean your home. It is just an option.
